This year’s National Association of Social Workers (NASW) theme to celebrate Social Work Month is Compassion + Action. As we’ve witnessed, policy changes have significantly impacted vulnerable populations, including unaccompanied children and youth. The NASW urges advocates to turn our compassion into action to help our nation address a variety of social challenges, including the prospect there could be mass deportations of migrants and continued attacks on other vulnerable population groups and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
This theme likely resonates with you, as it emphasizes the importance for organizations and advocates to lead with compassionate action in response to the rapid changes affecting unaccompanied youth. As we know, the challenges faced by unaccompanied youth are multi-faceted and these policy changes impact many different settings like schools, hospitals, government facilities, and communities as a whole- impacting how comfortable and safe unaccompanied youth feel in these spaces.
Two social work ethical values that embody both Compassion + Action are:
- Dignity and Worth of the Person: This principle calls for recognizing and respecting the inherent dignity and worth of a person by treating each person with care and respect while being mindful of individual differences and cultural and ethnic diversity.
- Social Justice: This principle encourages social workers (advocates) to actively challenge social injustice and advocate for change, particularly with and on behalf of vulnerable and marginalized groups. It involves ensuring equitable access to needed information, services, resources, and opportunities.
Equally powerful is the compassionate and action-driven response we have witnessed from many of you and your organizations as swift changes unfold. You have navigated uncertainty with unwavering commitment to uphold the dignity of unaccompanied children and youth. With every step forward in your clients’ cases and every social service connection to secure their basic needs such as food, shelter, and education, you are advancing social justice. Your compassion is evident in the empathy you show, your non-judgmental approach, the support you provide, and the kindness reflected in both your words and actions.
The theme of Compassion + Action also serves as a reminder to care for ourselves. Prioritizing self-compassion is essential to effectively support our clients in need. While the present may feel heavy and uncertain, taking time for self-care ensures we can continue showing up for our clients with resilience, strength and the compassion they deserve. As you dedicate yourself to others, don’t forget to:
- Take moments to pause and recharge.
- Lean on your colleagues and community for support.
- Celebrate the impact you make every day.
Happy Social Work Month!
