CILA Seeks to Collaborate with Local Practitioners – State Law SIJS Practice Manuals – Calling All Zealous Advocates in Maryland and New Jersey!

Does your organization or firm regularly pursue special immigrant juvenile determinations in state court? Do you do so in Maryland or New Jersey? If so, the team at the American Bar Association’s Children’s Immigration Law Academy (CILA) is looking to partner with you!

CILA is a capacity building organization supporting attorneys, legal staff, social services staff, and pro bono attorneys working with immigrant children. In 2023, we published a Texas Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) Practice Manual drafted by our expert team. We also teamed up with the Orlando Center for Justice to produce a Florida manual. This year, we partnered with Ayuda to produce a Virginia manual. We are finalizing a New York manual in collaboration with The Door. Completed manuals are all accessible on our website for those who set up a free CILA account.

We hope to soon identify partners and begin work on two additional manuals – one for practitioners in Maryland and another for practitioners in New Jersey. CILA has funding available and will contract with one partner in each state. The organization or firm would be the primary drafter and CILA will provide project management support, including drafting guidance and feedback as well as check-in meetings as needed. The creation of these resources entails several rounds of review, and a final draft of the work must be completed by March of 2025. The goal is to produce a manual that represents the SIJS practice in each state generally, not just in the specific counties in which a single organization or firm practices. As such, the project will require identifying and seeking review from practitioners from other counties within Maryland and within New Jersey.

If your organization of firm is interested, please feel free to reach out to Yasmin Yavar (yasmin.yavar@abacila.org) for more details. Please do so by Wednesday, May 15th. We will conduct a brief interview with those interested and notify you promptly if we are able to partner with your organization or firm.
