Greetings everyone! Do you want to improve your legal writing skills? Could you benefit from one-on-one feedback on your writing, but everyone around you is too busy to ask? If so, this post is for you!
We wanted to let you know about a great new resource, just recorded this week in collaboration with the brilliant folks at NILA. The hour-long Legal Writing Workshop webinar is now available for you to view. In it, Trina Realmuto, Mary Kenney, and Tiffany Lieu offer you their best writing tips. The webinar addresses how to persuasively frame arguments, the facts, and the proceedings below, as well as how to effectively respond to the government’s arguments. It also covers specific writing tips, citations, and common Bluebook mistakes. Finally, it provides tips for staying organized during the writing process. The content is super practical, and it will change the way you write.
The webinar has been approved for 1.0 participatory hour of CLE credit by the State Bar of Texas. You can watch it, ask us for the course number to receive CLE credit by sending an email to CILA at cila@abacila.org, and stop there. Or, you can take it one step further and ask to be put on a short list of Texas advocates (non-profit staff attorneys and DOJ accredited representatives get first priority) who will have their legal writing reviewed and critiqued by NILA staff. NILA is working with one advocate a month on this specialized technical assistance, and here’s what the commitment entails:
- Watch the Legal Writing Workshop webinar and let us know you’re interested in receiving feedback on your writing from NILA staff;
- If you are chosen, we’ll ask you to send along 3-5 writing samples, preferably substantive motions or briefs, so that NILA can review them; and
- Within a couple of weeks of receiving your samples, NILA will send written feedback and set up a one-hour video call to discuss their feedback with you.
So, all you have to do now is watch the webinar and express your interest and wait for us to reach out and let you know it’s your turn. That saves your spot and gives you time to identify those writing samples you want reviewed.
This is really a wonderful opportunity to take your writing to the next level, and with guidance from some of the best. We have less than a dozen slots, so write us soon!
